Objective: to determine the molarity of a commercial bottle of any compound.
Method:
1. Look at the details listed on the front and the side of the bottle. Look at the density, the richness, the minimum assay and the molecular mass of the compound.
*To avoid any problems we could have with the calculations, we will calculate the molarity of the solution in 1L of it. As the molarity is another way to express the density, this value will not change whether we use 1L or 37L.
2. Multiply the volume of the solution (1L) with the density of the solution. This will give as the mass of the solution.
3. Multiply this with the minimum
assay. This will give us the mass of the compound we have in the solution.
4. Divide the mass we obtained in the
step 3 by the molecular mass of the previous step. This will give as the number
of moles of the compound we have in the solution.
